Los pasados días 22, 23 y 24 de enero acudí al seminario organizado por IIE sobre Iniciativas Ambientales para un Futuro Sostenible que tuvo lugar en Los Ángeles. La temática principal de éste fue la gestión del agua en una región con un clima casi semiárido, como es el caso de L.A. Esta ciudad recibe escasas precipitaciones, pero además la forma en la que está diseñada no permite un buen aprovechamiento de este agua y la mayoría es enviada al mar, lo cual la obliga a importar el 89% del agua que utiliza.

Durante el seminario se expusieron los problemas que impiden el buen aprovechamiento del agua que cae sobre Los Ángeles, así como soluciones que se están llevando a cabo para mejorar esta situación y que son aplicables a otros lugares con problemas similares. La dinámica del evento me pareció muy buena. El programa incluía actividades de todo tipo, como conferencias, visitas on site, servicios comunitarios y la oportunidad de cenar con una familia residente en L.A. Personalmente, considero que ha sido una experiencia muy satisfactoria que me ha permitido aprender mucho sobre desarrollo sostenible y sobre todo me ha dado la oportunidad de conocer a personas muy interesantes.

During the past days I attended the Enrichment Seminar organized by IIE on Environmental Initiatives for a Sustainable Future that took place in Los Angeles on 22-24 January. The main topic of this seminar was water management in a region with an almost semi-arid climate like L.A. Not only receives this city poor precipitation, but also its design does not allow to take advantage of this water. Most of it is sent to the sea, which forces the city to import 89% of the water it uses.

During the seminar the problems that prevent the city from taking advantage of the rain water were exposed and some solutions to these problems were discussed. Many of these solutions are already in practice in Los Angeles and are as well applicable to other places with similar problems. The program included all kind of activities, such as conferences, on site visits, community service and the opportunity of having dinner with a local family. I personally had a very satisfying experience that gave me the chance to learn a lot about sustainability and especially gave me the opportunity to get to know very interesting people.
